|Know Before You Go:
Shopping for Your New Floor
Retailers want you to have the floor of your dreams, but they aren't mind readers!
When shopping at a floor-covering store, enlist the salesperson's assistance. They know a lot!
If you have a budget, be frank about it. Sales and designers can work within your guidelines if they know them.
They're also armed with knowledge about manufacturers and product lines which should help you get the best investment.
Discuss your decorating dreams with your retailer. Bring rough sketch of the area for which you're shopping for flooring. Measure each wall, and show the locations of windows, doorways and special architectural features and their dimensions.
Take along fabric, wallpaper or paint samples that coordinate with the flooring.
Be up-front about expectations. Do you have children? Pets? How much maintenance are you willing to keep your flooring looking new? With knowledge about the wear and tear your floor covering must withstand, salespeople and designers can offer selections that not only will be beautiful, but also functional.
Finally, to achieve the look you want for your lifestyle, be open-minded to alternatives.
