Preparing For New Carpet

Getting ready for your new carpet is not as daunting a task as you might think. There are a few things to take care of before installation day.

We cut your carpet on site (weather permitting). We most often utilize the driveway or the street. During inclement days we can cut in the garage. We lay out plastic to make sure your carpet stays as clean as possible. If it looks like rain, it would be helpful to clear some space in the garage, if you can.

Customarily, First Choice Abbey Carpet will remove and dispose of your old carpet and pad as well as move your furniture. We due ask that you move breakable items on top of tables and dressers. It is not necessary to empty drawers. If you have a china or curio cabinet, that will have to be emptied. Book cases that need to be moved should be free of books on the shelves.

It is not necessary for you to move electronic items, but we do ask that they be disconnected. If needed we can refer you to someone who can reconnect your electronics for you.

You do not need to completely empty your closets, but we do ask that the floors be clear. Usually you can just put shoes and things on closet shelves. We also, move the beds, but ask that you remove your bed linens.

Most often we work with your existing baseboards and we reuse the tack strip from your previous installation. If we find strip that has rust or has been pet stained, we replace those pieces. In the case of a floor that has never had carpet, we install new tackstrip.

We are often asked by clients who want new baseboards how that is best handled. We do provide and install baseboard, but if you are having that done elsewhere or if you are doing it yourself, it can be done either before or after the carpet is installed. It is easier for us to install carpet if the baseboard is done prior, but not mandatory. The baseboard should be installed 1/4" above the floor. This spacing allows room for us to tuck in the carpet securely.

Unfortunately, we cannot move large pianos or pool tables. There are companies who do move these items that we have worked with in the past and we would feel comfortable referring those companies. We can usually move a small upright or spinet if we don't have to go up or down any stairs.

We primarily use furniture sliders rather than lifting. There is much less chance of damage when we slide your items from room to room. It is important that furniture be completely removed from the room so that we can properly stretch your carpet during installation. We can disassemble larger items that won't fit through a door. This can be discussed prior to contract.

After installation our workmen will vacuum your new carpet and replace the furniture. There are pieces left over from the install. Please tell the installers which pieces you would like to keep. We will dispose of the rest.

We try our best to make the process as painless as possible. If you have special considerations, we work with you to resolve the issue. If you have a question, just give us a call.
